Starting Plants from Seeds
Gardeners itching for spring can get a head start by planting seeds indoors. Some basic equipment and a little patience will yield great results.
At Gemmell’s we carry a great selection of pots, seed trays, peat pellets, soil and many varieties of easy-to-grow seeds.
Great choices for beginners are marigolds, nasturtium, sunflowers and asters. Kids will love to start cucumbers, pumpkins and watermelons in individual peat pellets – ready to pop in the garden in June.
To begin, moisten soil and place in sterile containers. Plant seeds and germinate as per instructions on back of package. Use a hand held mister to water gently. The seed package will tell you when it’s time to transplant if necessary.
For more details we carry two great books. Check out Gardening Month by Month in Ontario by Alison Beck and Annuals for Ontario by Alison Beck and Kathy Renwald.
Don’t wait for spring thaw – get your hands into that soil now!
